Works on the rehabilitation of the Dar port is at 80 percent. Once completed large vessels with load carrying up to 70,000 tonnes will be able to dock at the port. The cargo handling capacity will be increased to about 17.65 million tonnes per year.

The project is being financed in part by the World Bank which has provided roughly $350M in loans and grants, while the remainder - approximately $70M - is being provided by the TPA. Image Also the UK's Department for International Development has also put forward grant assistance.

The upgrades are being undertaken by China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC).
