Job Title : Village Educator (1 Post)

Duty station : Arusha
Reporting to : Alternative Care Coordinator
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES.
  • Behaves in an exemplary manner at all times so that the children may have a model from which they may learn how to live successful lives.
  • Is present during weekday evenings, weekends and holidays in order to guide the children during their rest, meal and study hours.
  • Participates fully in all cultural or Village festivities and celebrations.
  • Work closely with SOS Mothers to play a significant role in their children’s education, stimulating their interest in learning within the home.
  • Provides advice, guidance and support to Mothers on educational and psychological issues. SOS children must be made to see learning as a worthwhile, interesting and enjoyable activity.
  • Encourages and assists Mothers to improve their own educational skills so that they are able to provide greater educational support to their children. This includes the development and implementation of programs to raise the educational level of Mothers.
  • Organizes educational and extra-curricular activities which the children will find interesting and enjoyable.
  • Plans, implements and supervises Village holiday programs and activities, providing input to possible educational activities, and sports recreational and other activities.
  • Acts as liaison between the Village children and the schools they are attending. This involves maintaining contact with teachers and other school staff as necessary.
  • Ensures that all teachers / trainers involved with SOS children are informed of how SOS operates. Encourages teachers to visit the Children’s Village to gain a deeper understanding of the children and their educational needs.
  • Attends Parent-Teacher Association meetings of all schools in which SOS children are enrolled, together with the Alternative Care Coordinator, Child and Youth Development Officers and relevant SOS Mothers.
  • Maintains active files on all Village children (including youth). Ensures such files contain all documentation relevant to each child’s academic progress, including reports and performance evaluations. Regularly updates such files.
  • Conducts regular reviews (at least half-yearly) of each child’s educational progress, together with the Alternative Care Coordinator and relevant SOS Mother, in order to assess educational development and needs of each child.
  • Develops and coordinates a study program for all Village children (e.g. guided home-work sessions) highlighting study methods and providing support in the children’s weaker areas, in order to improve academic performance.
  • Identifies alternative educational / vocational skills training opportunities for those children who are not progressing in SOS or community schools.
  • Ensures that all children attain religious education and practice their spiritual development in accordance to their religion.
  • Supports the Administration in the budget proposal on expenses related to education, sports and other extra-curricular activities
  • Develops a clear understanding of each child’s skills, abilities, potential, future prospects, and aspirations. Supports the Mothers and Child and Youth Development officers in the preparation of children’s development plans.
  • Provides children with ongoing career counseling and job orientation designed to prepare them for their eventual independence.
  • Keeps informed of available vocational training and educational opportunities, including those offered by SOS locally and in other countries.
  • Works in close cooperation with the Child and Youth Development Officers, where applicable.
  • Attends management meetings as a part of the Village management team, and assists with general managerial duties as required.
  • Support the program on the implementation of “ One Child Objective” in the village
  • Performs any other reasonable duties as required by the Alternative Care Coordinator from time to time.
ACADEMIC QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCES:
  • Bachelor degree in Education, psychology and counselling
  • At least three years of relevant professional experience
  • Experience in working with children/youth environment preferably in NGO
  • Ability to work independently, self-organize, use initiative, keeps commitments and meets deadlines.
  • Interested and skilled in educational and career guidance.
  • Strong interpersonal and team skills.
  • Stable and mature personality, good listener, patient and understanding
  • Fluent in English and Swahili.
  • Computer literacy
Note: The position requires the Alternative Care Coordinator to live within the SOS Children’s Village.
